CVs

CV is short for curriculum vitae – a Latin term which means “the story of your life”. It should be used to sell your skills and experience.

Supply a covering letter with your CV, detailing the area of employment that you are seeking and emphasising your key attributes.

Be concise – you should aim to cover a maximum of two typed sides of A4 paper, using titles and bullet points where necessary.

Your CV should contain the following:

  • Personal details – name, address, telephone number.

  • Personal statement – a brief statement summarising your key skills and personal attributes.

  • Employment history – starting with the most recent first, list the positions you’ve held. Include the name of the employer, your position, the duration of employment and your key duties and responsibilities.

  • Education/training – list in chronological order (most recent first), detailing the name of the educational establishment and qualifications obtained.

  • Supporting information – summarise additional achievements, awards, skills (such as fluency in a foreign language) or licenses held (for example, SIA or HGV licence).

  • References – supply the contact details of two people a potential employer could approach for a reference, such as a manager or lecturer (ask their permission first).

When you’re happy with your CV, check carefully for mistakes, print out a few copies and ensure you save a hard copy.
